Ayakoromor Bridge: Commissioner Izeze Hails Governor Oborevwori’s Audacious Strides
By Favour Bibaikefie
Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Hon. Comrade Reuben Izeze, has commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for demonstrating what he described as “rare political courage” in reviving the long-abandoned Ayakoromor Bridge Project, linking Ughelli South to Burutu Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking during an inspection of ongoing work, Izeze explained that the bridge had been left unattended for years due to lapses in due diligence and poor construction standards. He revealed that integrity tests carried out by professionals showed that most of the previous structural components were compromised, making continuation under the old contract impossible.
According to the Commissioner, rather than divert funds or abandon the project, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori made the bold decision to cancel the faulty contract and re-awarded it to a competent firm. He described this move as both unusual and courageous.
“What is happening here is practically the construction of a brand-new bridge. The old structures failed integrity tests and had to be demolished. Many administrations might have walked away from such a challenge, but Governor Oborevwori insisted it must be rebuilt correctly. That is the mark of his courage,” Izeze said.
He further noted that demolition and reconstruction are in progress, with new pillars and slabs being installed to ensure durability and safety. Despite the high financial cost, Izeze emphasized that the governor’s insistence on quality reflects his commitment to keeping promises to the people of Delta State.
The Commissioner also issued a strong warning against unauthorised individuals attempting to steal rods or other materials from the demolished sections, directing security agencies to arrest and prosecute offenders. “That asset belongs to the state. Nobody is authorised to remove anything from the project site without approval from the Ministry of Works,” he declared.
Describing the governor’s leadership as one that “leaves no stone unturned,” Izeze stated that Oborevwori’s unusual governance style is reviving long-forgotten projects and ensuring they are completed with quality.
“This bridge is not just another project, he said. “It represents faith in the people and proves we have a Governor who keeps his word. Communities benefitting from this bridge will always remember Sheriff Oborevwori as the leader who dared to achieve the impossible.” Izeze proclaimed.
