Beijing, China – In a very rear capture on state media cameras or microphones, Chinese President Xi Jin Ping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin were overheard discussing biotechnology, organ transplants, and the possibility of extending human life – even to the point of immortality – as they walked together ahead of the China’s grand military parade this week.

Historic images from Tiananmen Square showed Xi warmly greeting Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un before the trio proceeded along a ceremonial red carpet. The striking scene, viewed as a symbolic counterweight to Washington, was broadcast live by Chinese state television.

As the leaders conversed, Xi was heard reflecting on age and longevity. “These days… 70 years old,” Xi said in Mandarin, before his translator added context with a Tang dynasty verse: “In the past, it was rear for someone to live beyond 70. Now they say, even at 70, one is still young.”

Putin responded with remarks that revealed a sweeping view of biotechnology’s potential. According to the Chinese translator, the the Russian leader suggested that with rapid medical advances, “human organs can be continuously replaced, people could grow younger as they age, and perhaps even achieve immortality.”

Xi replied that scientific predictions now suggest lifespans could extend dramatically within this century. “It may be possible to live to 150 years old,” he remarked before cameras cut away.

Putin later confirmed the exchange at a press briefing, recalling Xi’s comments during their walk to the parade. “Modern medicine, and even surgical innovations such as organ replacement gives humanity hope that active life can be extended far beyond what we know today,” he said.

Both leaders, whi are 72, remain firmly entrenched in power. Xi, who abolished presidential term limits in 2018, secured a third term in 2023 – breaking with the precedent set by his predecessors Jiang Zemin and Hu Jitao. Putin, likewise, has shown no sign od stepping aside, positioning himself at the centre of Russian’s political future.

The exchange between Xi and Putin highlights not only their growing personal rapport but also their shared fascination with the frontier of biotechnology – a subject that resonates with their own advancing age and their vision of shaping history far into the future.

ABUJA, Nigeria – December 26, 2025

The United States military launched coordinated airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) targets in northwest Nigeria on Thursday, confirming a significant escalation in international counter-terrorism cooperation.

President Donald Trump announced the operation, saying U.S. forces had carried out “powerful and deadly” strikes against militants linked to Islamic State in Sokoto State.

According to official statements, the strikes were ordered at the direction of the U.S. Commander-in-Chief and carried out with the support of Nigerian authorities, CBS News reported.

The U.S. Department of War released video footage showing munitions being launched toward militant positions, underscoring Washington’s commitment to confronting extremist groups in West Africa. U.S. Africa Command, which oversees American military operations on the continent, said the initial assessment pointed to the death of several ISIS fighters, Fox News reported.

In a social media post, President Trump framed the strikes as part of a broader effort to halt attacks on vulnerable communities, particularly in areas where extremist violence has surged.

Nigerian officials described the operation as part of ongoing security cooperation, emphasizing shared intelligence and strategic planning to counter persistent threats from extremist factions.

The operation marks one of the most visible U.S. military actions in Nigeria in 2025, reflecting deepening ties between Abuja and Washington in addressing the complex security landscape marked by Islamist insurgencies and criminal violence. Nigerian authorities reiterated that the fight against terrorism transcends religious lines, stressing that violent groups have targeted both Christian and Muslim communities in recent years, Reuters added.

Security analysts say the strikes may signal further foreign involvement in countering extremist networks in the region, even as Nigerian forces continue domestic operations against multiple militant groups.
