Breaking: Agbedi’s Bill for the Creation of Federal College of Education, Aghoro Scales Nigerian Senate

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Senate has passed the Federal Colleges of Education (Amendment) Bill, 2025, providing for the establishment of a Federal College of Education (Technical) in Aghoro, Bayelsa State—bringing to fruition a legislative effort that has spanned multiple Assemblies.
The bill was first sponsored by Distinguished Senator Foster Ogola during the 8th National Assembly. It was passed in the House of Representatives in the final days of that Assembly, thanks to the efforts of Hon. Fred Agbedi, but failed to receive Presidential assent before the Assembly’s tenure ended.
Determined to see the institution established, Hon. Agbedi—now a member of the 10th Assembly representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency and serving as Chairman of the House Committee on Special Duties—reintroduced the bill in the House of Representatives in 2024. The House passed the bill in late 2024, paving the way for its final passage in the Senate.
Working in close collaboration with Senator Ogola and supportive colleagues across both chambers, Agbedi’s persistence has now culminated in full legislative approval.
The Bill, formally titled “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Federal Colleges of Education Act, Cap F8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004”, was read a second time in the Senate, debated, and committed to the Committee of the Whole for detailed consideration.
Key Provisions of the Bill:
Clause 1 amends the principal Act to incorporate the new institution into the framework of existing Federal Colleges of Education.
Clause 2 updates the First Schedule of the Act by inserting:
“(z) Federal College of Education (Technical), Aghoro, Bayelsa State.”
Clause 3 provides for the citation: Federal Colleges of Education (Amendment) Act, 2025.
After an in-depth review, the Senate adopted all clauses and passed the Bill during its third reading.
The establishment of the Federal College of Education (Technical) in Aghoro is poised to significantly enhance opportunities for technical teacher training in the region. It aims to foster educational growth and meet the rising demand for skilled professionals in Bayelsa State and beyond.
The Bill is now set to receive presidential assent to become official law, marking a promising development for education in Nigeria.

The United States military launched coordinated airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) targets in northwest Nigeria on Thursday, confirming a significant escalation in international counter-terrorism cooperation.
President Donald Trump announced the operation, saying U.S. forces had carried out “powerful and deadly” strikes against militants linked to Islamic State in Sokoto State.
According to official statements, the strikes were ordered at the direction of the U.S. Commander-in-Chief and carried out with the support of Nigerian authorities, CBS News reported.
The U.S. Department of War released video footage showing munitions being launched toward militant positions, underscoring Washington’s commitment to confronting extremist groups in West Africa. U.S. Africa Command, which oversees American military operations on the continent, said the initial assessment pointed to the death of several ISIS fighters, Fox News reported.
In a social media post, President Trump framed the strikes as part of a broader effort to halt attacks on vulnerable communities, particularly in areas where extremist violence has surged.
Nigerian officials described the operation as part of ongoing security cooperation, emphasizing shared intelligence and strategic planning to counter persistent threats from extremist factions.

As the countdown begins for the forthcoming Ijaw Media Conference Volume 2, the organizers, Ijaw Publishers’ Forum (IPF) has announced that the President of Egbema Brotherhood, Alaowei Promise Lawuru, has accepted the role of Guest of Honour come December 2025.
IPF had earlier announced the second edition of its annual event, with the Christined “Safeguarding Niger Delta’s Natural Resources for Future Generations.”
Chief Lawuru, the young Ijaw businessman and politician, received a delegation of the Central Working Committee led by Pastor Arex Akemotubo last Monday, where the invitation was extended to him.
Akemotubo explained that this year’s theme was chosen out of concern for the growing strain on the region’s land and waters. The Publisher of WaffiTV stressed that the forum wants to strengthen public understanding, support honest reporting, and encourage leaders to protect the resources of the Niger Delta for generations to come, adding that Lawuru’s antecedence of service to humanity and unwavering commitment to community development made him a natural choice for the role.
