The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has officially announced the postponement of the much-anticipated Ijaw Cultural Day and Award Event in honour of the late elder statesman, Pa. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, following his recent passing.
In a statement signed by the INC President, Prof. Benjamin Ogele Okaba, the congress described Pa. Clark as a “father figure, beacon of wisdom, and tireless advocate for the Ijaw nation and the Niger Delta.” His contributions toward unity, development, and justice for his people are considered invaluable and will continue to inspire future generations.
Extended Mourning Period
As a mark of deep respect for his legacy and lifelong commitment to the Ijaw cause, the INC has extended the official mourning period from three (3) days to seven (7) days. The extended period will give the Ijaw community, allies, and well-wishers sufficient time to reflect on Pa. Clark’s remarkable life and mourn his passing appropriately. The mourning period will officially end by midnight on February 25, 2025.
The INC also assured the public that a new date for the Ijaw Cultural Day & Award Event will be announced soon, with the rescheduled event now expected to serve as a broader tribute to Pa. Clark’s enduring influence on the Ijaw nation and Nigeria as a whole.
Plans for a National Burial Committee
In addition to extending the mourning period, the INC revealed plans to establish a National Burial Committee. The committee, to be constituted by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the INC, will collaborate closely with the family of the late Pa. Clark, community leaders, government representatives at all levels, and various interest groups across the globe.
The goal is to ensure that the late elder statesman receives a well-deserved burial that reflects his profound impact on the Ijaw people and the nation at large.
A Legacy Beyond Borders
Pa. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark was a towering figure in Nigerian politics and activism, known for his relentless pursuit of justice and development for the Niger Delta region. His contributions, spanning several decades, made him a symbol of unity and progress for the Ijaw people and an inspiration for advocates of minority rights across the country.
The INC has called on all Ijaw sons and daughters, as well as friends of the Ijaw nation, to observe the extended mourning period with “dignity and reverence” in honour of the late leader’s memory.
“May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire unity, progress, and justice within the Ijaw nation,” the statement concluded.
Further announcements regarding funeral arrangements and official events in his honour will be made by the INC in due course.

The United States military launched coordinated airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) targets in northwest Nigeria on Thursday, confirming a significant escalation in international counter-terrorism cooperation.
President Donald Trump announced the operation, saying U.S. forces had carried out “powerful and deadly” strikes against militants linked to Islamic State in Sokoto State.
According to official statements, the strikes were ordered at the direction of the U.S. Commander-in-Chief and carried out with the support of Nigerian authorities, CBS News reported.
The U.S. Department of War released video footage showing munitions being launched toward militant positions, underscoring Washington’s commitment to confronting extremist groups in West Africa. U.S. Africa Command, which oversees American military operations on the continent, said the initial assessment pointed to the death of several ISIS fighters, Fox News reported.

As the countdown begins for the forthcoming Ijaw Media Conference Volume 2, the organizers, Ijaw Publishers’ Forum (IPF) has announced that the President of Egbema Brotherhood, Alaowei Promise Lawuru, has accepted the role of Guest of Honour come December 2025.
IPF had earlier announced the second edition of its annual event, with the Christined “Safeguarding Niger Delta’s Natural Resources for Future Generations.”
Chief Lawuru, the young Ijaw businessman and politician, received a delegation of the Central Working Committee led by Pastor Arex Akemotubo last Monday, where the invitation was extended to him.
Akemotubo explained that this year’s theme was chosen out of concern for the growing strain on the region’s land and waters. The Publisher of WaffiTV stressed that the forum wants to strengthen public understanding, support honest reporting, and encourage leaders to protect the resources of the Niger Delta for generations to come, adding that Lawuru’s antecedence of service to humanity and unwavering commitment to community development made him a natural choice for the role.
Chief Lawuru welcomed the invitation and spoke warmly about the need for shared responsibility among stakeholders and groups such the IPF. He commended the Forum for using media to defend the region’s interests and promised full support for the conference.
Lawuru further urged other stakeholders across the Ijaw nation to throw their weight behind efforts that safeguard the resources and environment of Ijaw nation in particular and the larger Niger Delta region.
