NNPC Refutes Claims on Port Harcourt Refinery, Clarifies Operations
By Favour Bibaikefie

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has dismissed allegations regarding the functionality of the Port Harcourt Refinery, urging the public to disregard misleading reports. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, criticized individuals allegedly misusing technical terms like “blending” and “refining” to spread falsehoods and hinder progress in the refinery’s rehabilitation.
Addressing Allegations on Refinery Operations
This response comes amid accusations that the NNPCL mixed Crack C5 from Indorama Company with Naphtha and marketed it as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. Dismissing these claims as unfounded, the NNPCL emphasized that the refinery is actively producing refined products.
According to the statement, “The Old Port Harcourt Refinery is currently operating at 70% capacity, with plans underway to increase this to 90%.”
Distinguishing Refining from Blending
Soneye highlighted the distinctions between refining and blending, explaining that PMS is not a single compound but a complex mixture derived from various refinery products.
“Modern fuel production relies on both blending and refining, which are intricate processes that ensure PMS meets quality standards and consumer demands,” he clarified. Soneye further urged the public to disregard attempts by some individuals to misuse technical jargon to undermine confidence in the refinery’s operations.
Commitment to Efficiency
The NNPCL reiterated its dedication to enhancing the Port Harcourt Refinery’s performance and achieving optimal output. The company also affirmed its resolve to address misinformation and foster public awareness of the intricacies of fuel production.
The statement reinforces NNPCL’s focus on transparency and its efforts to guarantee a steady supply of refined petroleum products across Nigeria.
