BREAKING: CBN Orders Banks to Accept Old N500, N1000 Notes, In A Rather Bezare Twist.
In what appears to question the sanity of the ranks of the CBN, the apex bank has reportedly made a U-turn on its earlier decision for all citizens to deposit their old #500 and #1000 notes only at the CBN as it has now ordered commercial banks to resume the collection of old N500 and N1,000 notes from the public.
However, this doesn’t come without pegging a maximum deposit amount at N500,000, while maintaining that the old #500 and #1000 currencies were no longer valid legal tenders.
The CBN informed that this new directive is to cure the difficulties citizens have encountered within the last 48 hours in getting access to the various CBN premises to deposit their old notes.
Our source at the CBN said;
“Go to your bank but fill out the form before you go. Go with the reference code you generate. With your code, banks will collect it from you. But if it is more than 500,000, you will go to the CBN and deposit it.”
The import is that Nigerians still need to fill out the deposit form earlier announced by the CBN before taking a generated “reference code” and their money to their respective commercial banks to make such deposit.
It is noteworthy that, anyone depositing more than #500,000 is still required to go to the nearest CBN branch instead as the commercial banks will not accept more than that amount.
