Bayelsa Man Flees Marriage Ceremony Over Incessant Demands in Imo State

By Divine Perezide
A wedding engagement ceremony in Imo State took a dramatic turn when a Bayelsa man, Biobelemoye David, absconded from the event after being subjected to a series of unexpected financial demands by the bride’s family.
David had already paid a substantial sum of N1,500,000 to cover expenses for food, tents, chairs, and a public address system. Additionally, he set aside N100,000 as the agreed bride price. However, tensions began to rise when he was asked to pay an extra N50,000 to the bride’s family because he had impregnated his fiancée before the marriage.
Things worsened when David was fined N10,000 for taking a wrong turn and arriving at the wrong homestead, followed by another N15,000 charge to “appease the elders” who had grown tired of waiting for him to arrive.
The turning point of the ceremony came when twelve women, all covered in loose robes from head to toe, were paraded before David. He was asked to identify his fiancée from the group. When he pointed at the wrong woman, he was hit with another fine of N15,000.
The decisive blow, however, was when the elders demanded a refund of N850,000 for the bride’s school fees and upkeep since her primary school days.
Furious but attempting to maintain composure, David excused himself by saying he needed to visit a nearby latrine. Instead, he made a swift exit from the scene, switched off his phone, and was last seen boarding a bus headed to Bayelsa State.
Witnesses at the event were left stunned by his sudden disappearance. One elder remarked, “The young man just vanished. We never expected such drama.”
As news of the incident spread, social media users expressed mixed reactions, with many criticizing the excessive financial demands placed on prospective grooms in some traditional marriage customs.
The bride’s family has yet to make an official statement, while David remains unreachable.
