KUKAH TO FG: Repeal Law Banning Religious Broadcast Licenses

By Tobouke JEMINE

Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Archbishop of Sokoto Diocese, is advocating for the repeal of a law that prevents religious organizations from owning broadcast licenses in Nigeria.

He made this appeal during the Catholic Herald Centenary Lecture and Awards Presentation in Lagos, emphasizing that this law restricts freedom of expression and limits the ability of religious bodies to share their perspectives with the public.

Kukah highlighted the contributions of early Catholic missionaries, who established schools and a newspaper that challenged colonial injustices. However, he lamented that their descendants are not holding significant leadership positions in the country.

The Archbishop expressed frustration that individuals with questionable backgrounds can own media outlets, while the Catholic Church and other religious organizations are restricted by law.

He challenged President Bola Tinubu to abolish the law, stating that “Anyone can set up a radio or television station, but the Catholic Church cannot, because the government is afraid we may misuse it.

This law must be abolished if we are serious about moving forward.” Kukah also emphasized the need for Nigerians to confront the state’s failure to meet its constitutional obligations, regardless of the government in power.

The event was attended by top government officials, business leaders, and religious figures, including representatives of President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Awards were presented to several eminent Nigerians, recognizing their contributions to public discourse and the country’s development.
