The First Bank of Nigeria has declared their readiness to comply with the CBN directive.

This was made known via a public notice circulated by the bank today.

“PUBLIC NOTICE.

“This is to inform you that our branches shall be receive old notes..” the statement read in part.

However, the bank was clear on the maximum amount it can accept and the prerequisite for the acceptance as follows;

“..of up to a maximum of #500,000 (five hundred thousand Naira) after registration on the CBN portal.” It clarified.

The bank further advised customers with more than the maximum of #500,000 (five hundred thousand Naira) to the the nearest CBN.

“Please note that deposits of more than #500,000 (five hundred thousand Naira) should be taken to the nearest CBN location.”

The first bank secular also informed that her branches will be opened with effect from tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023 only for the purpose of receiving deposits of the old bank notes.

However, in a twist, the CBN has issued a public notice, denying giving any such directives.

In a two paragraph statement signed by Osita Nwanisobi, Director, Corporate Communication and circulated by major news platforms including Channels Tv, the CBN says;

The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to some fake and unauthorized messages quoting the CBN as having authorized the deposit Money Banks to collect the old #500 and #1000 Banknotes. For the avoidance of doubt, and in line with Mr. President’s broadcast of February 16, 2023, the CBN has been directed to ONLY release and recirculate the old #200 banknotes and this is expected to circulated as legal tender for 60 days up to April 10, 2023. Members of the public should therefore disregard any message and/or information not formally by the Central Bank of Nigeria on this subject.

“Media practitioners are advised to PLEASE verify any information from the correct source before publication.” the statement concluded.
