N1.98trn 13% Derivation Fund Arrears Disbursed To Oil Producing States In 7 Years – FG
The Federal Government of Nigeria has made more revelations on the burning issue of accrued remittances disbursed to the Oil Producing States of the Niger Delta and Lagos. The FG claims that so far, a total of N1.98 trillion has been remitted as part of the 13% Derivation backlog payable to Oil Producing States, including Lagos.
This was made known by the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, who revealed this on Thursday during her presentation at sixth edition of the President Muhammadu Buhari Administration Scorecard.
According to Mrs. Finance Minister, the amount was paid in installments across the last seven years. Adding that this was despite the fact that, some of the owed remittances were inherited by the Buhari administration.
In her words:
“One of the key functions of the Ministry of Finance Budget and National Planning is to support the states.
“We wouldn’t have been able to grow consistently without enabling the states to grow because it is a federation.
“Mr. President has been very uniquely generous in his support to states. I can say no president has provided the level of support provided to the states of the Federation.
“He understands that the federating units need to work together as one to achieve the targets that he has set for the country. So everybody goes to support sub-national governments.
“In seven years, we have disbursed N1.98 trillion in funds to oil-producing states.”
IduwiniVoice Economy recalls that, the topic became one which called for some serious discussion after Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State Governor revealed the source of monies he spends on his spey of developmental projects, during the inauguration of the National Law School, Portharcourt. The governor shared his appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for agreeing to remit 13% derivation monies owed the oil producing states since 2004, when the new formula came to life.
He later wondered aloud what his neighbouring governors can say they have spent their received share of the money on.
It is no long news that there have been widespread call for satisfactory explanations from the affected governors, since Wike made this disclosure.
Whilst some states have come out to make attempts at putting the matter into proper context, others have remained mum as the controversies continue to evolved.
Last week, a document stating details of the accruals and remittances, puportedly originating from the Presidency was seen widely circulated online. Today, a more federal face is put to the matter as the Finance Minister lend her voice too.
